Dr. Naudé conducted a presentation at the annual Day Hospital Association South Africa Conference on 4-5 September. He focused on the patient journey at a day hospital. The journey starts when the patient realises that they need help to resolve a foot-related problem, through the surgical experience, and recovery from surgery.
The purpose of the presentation was to highlight the benefits of surgeries at a day hospital. When considering a day hospital for surgery, many factors need to be considered, such as patient age and comorbidities, time to mobilisation, and patient care after surgery to name a few.
The Day Hospital Association of SA states that they promote day surgery for the appropriate patient, with the appropriate procedure, receiving appropriate care in an appropriate facility. Day hospitals remain the appropriate setting for day surgery procedures where patients have a faster same-day discharge time, on-time surgery slots and an extremely low risk of infection. Day hospitals' main objective and focus are to provide quality, safe and cost-effective diagnostic and surgical procedures on a same-day basis. Visit their website at https://www.dhasa.co.za/available-procedures/ to see a list of procedures that can be performed at day hospitals.
The conference was managed very well by Leonie Bredell and included well-known presenters such as Prof Alex van den Heever (WITS) and Dr Nicholas Crisp (NHI) who presented their views on the current state of the NHI; as well as representatives from the major medical aids - Discovery, Momentum and GEMS.
Thank you to the team at CUREDAY Erasmuskloof for making day surgeries a pleasant, effective experience for Dr. Naudé and his patients.
