But it was not all work. Dr Naude had the opportunity to explore the beautiful city, Seoul, with his colleagues; visiting traditional palaces, traditional hanoks (villages), the DMZ (zone between North and South Korea) and the opportunity (or challenge?) to try local foods.

Dr Naude visited the Seoul Olympic Park to view the Born Fast sculpture. "The sculpture represents the skeleton of a foot in a sprint start position. At 2.62 metres tall, and made of bronze painted white, this impressive sculpture was created by South Korean artist Lee Hyungkoo.

In his speech, and using his experience in orthopaedic surgery, Jacques Rogge explained that recent research had proved that the ability to run fast was greatly dependent on the morphology of the foot. He also noted that the Born Fast sculpture was a perfect illustration of the wish dear to the IOC’s: to link sport, art and culture".

A walk in the Songpu Naru Park revealed a traditional Korean belief in walking on Red Clay. The (loosely translated) signpost reads as follows: Walking on the red clay generates thermal energy that removes harmful substances. It can prevent aging, prevent chronic fatigue and prevent various adult diseases by facilitating metabolism. In addition, walking barefoot detoxifies the body, improves digestive functions, assists headache relief, recovery from fatigue, can improve memory and blood circulation. Seems like we need to take a note from Koreans and walk barefoot more often!

Notice the finger heart symbol - The mini heart gesture was popularised by K-Pop idols in South Korea who would often use the gesture to express their love and gratitude to their fans. Now also a suitable way to show gratitude for excellent service at Dr Naude's practice :)
