Dr Jaco Naudé presented a talk 2 October 2024 at Cure Day Erasmuskloof Hospital on Achilles ruptures and tendinopathies.
The event was met with great enthusiasm and was well attended by a diverse audience of healthcare professionals, including general practitioners, physiotherapists, nurses and other orthopaedic surgeons.
Dr Jaco Naudé's insightful presentation covered the presentation and management of Achilles tendon ruptures, insertional and non-insertional Achilles tendonitis, providing attendees with valuable knowledge and practical insights into treating these injuries.
The topic is valuable for discussion as the Achilles tendon is the most frequently ruptured tendon in the lower extremity, especially in "weekend warriors". Loss of Achilles function leads to loss of plantarflexion strength, weakness, fatigue, limp, an inability to run, heel rise, play sports and climb stairs. A rupture is often present when a person cannot stand on their toes, swelling is present around the ankle and Simmond's triad is present. Conservative or surgical treatment options are available, depending on each patient's clinical examination and imaging results. Rehabilitation is an important part of the treatment protocol to ensure managed return to play.
The second topic discussed was Achilles Tendinosis. This is when there is a chronic degenerative process with an inadequate reparative response accompanied by collagen degeneration, fibre disorientation, scattered vascular ingrowth, and paucity of inflammation. These injuries are classified as insertional Achilles tendonitis or non-insertional Achilles tendonitis. These injuries present with pain that interferes with function and athletic activity and is most severe on the first movement after a period of rest. Conservative or surgical treatment options are available, depending on each patients' clinical examination and imaging results. Again, proper rehabilitation forms a very important part of the treatment protocol to ensure managed return to play.
Dr Jaco Naudé was joined at the event by his team from Centre of Orthopaedics Pretoria.
