On 16 September 2023 Dr Naudé published an article in Foot and Ankle Clinics journal on the Outcomes of Total Ankle Arthroplasty After Periprosthetic Cyst Curettage and Bone Grafting. This article was a collaboration between Dr. Naudé and renowned foot and ankle specialists Dr. Paulo Ferrao and Dr Nikiforos Saragas.
Key points of the article:
Total ankle arthroplasty has become a popular and viable management option for end-stage ankle arthritis.
Periprosthetic osteolysis is a common cause of reoperation and revision surgery.
Osteolytic bone cysts develop as a response to inflammatory-mediated osteoclastic bone resorption.
A computed tomographic scan with metal subtraction should be done in all suspected cyst cases to confirm location, quantify lesion size, and aid in surgical planning when indicated.
Curettage and bone grafting of asymptomatic large periprosthetic cysts can be beneficial in preventing implant displacement and failure, thereby increasing implant survival and functional outcomes.
